Anxiety: Symptoms, Causes & Treatment
by Amy Campbell, LMFT, Founder of Campbell Therapy
Everyone worries sometimes. Anxiety is different. It can leave you constantly on edge, stuck in your own thoughts, avoiding situations you used to handle with ease, or feeling like your mind just won't slow down.
The good news is that anxiety is one of the most treatable mental health conditions. Therapy can help you understand what's fueling your anxiety and give you practical tools to feel more in control.
What Is Anxiety?
Anxiety is your body's natural response to stress. In the right situations, it's helpful—it keeps you alert and prepared. But when worry becomes constant, feels impossible to control, or starts interfering with your work, relationships, sleep, or daily life, it may be an anxiety disorder.
Anxiety doesn't always look like panic attacks. Sometimes it shows up as overthinking, perfectionism, people-pleasing, trouble relaxing, or always expecting something to go wrong.
Signs of Anxiety
Common symptoms include:
Constant worry that's difficult to quiet
Feeling restless, tense, or on edge
Racing thoughts or overthinking
Difficulty concentrating
Trouble falling or staying asleep
Muscle tension or frequent headaches
A racing heart, shortness of breath, or sweating
Avoiding situations because they feel overwhelming
Panic attacks or sudden waves of intense fear
Why Does Anxiety Happen?
Anxiety usually develops from a combination of factors, including genetics, life experiences, chronic stress, trauma, personality, and the way our brains respond to perceived threats.
Sometimes there's a clear reason for anxiety. Other times, it seems to appear without warning. Either way, anxiety is real, common, and treatable.
How Therapy Can Help
Therapy isn't about learning how to "stop worrying." It's about understanding the patterns that keep anxiety going and developing healthier ways to respond.
At Campbell Therapy, we tailor treatment to your unique experiences and goals. Depending on what's driving your anxiety, we may use CBT, mindfulness, attachment-focused therapy, EFT, trauma-informed care, or other evidence-based approaches to help you feel calmer, more confident, and better equipped to handle life's challenges.
Some people also benefit from medication, which can be discussed with your primary care provider or psychiatrist.
When Should You Reach Out?
If anxiety is affecting your daily functioning, relationships, work, or ability to enjoy everyday life, it's worth talking with someone. You don't have to wait until you're having panic attacks or feeling completely overwhelmed before seeking support.
