EMDR: Treatment Process, Potential Benefits, and Other Considerations

by Amy Campbell, LMFT, Founder of Campbell Therapy

EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, has a long name, but it begins with a simple understanding:

Some experiences, whether sudden or prolonged, can overwhelm the nervous system’s ability to cope. Under intense stress, the brain prioritizes protection. Thinking clearly, regulating emotions, making sense of what is happening, and processing it becomes more difficult. The effects can persist in our memories, emotions, and body sensations, so an experience may continue to feel threatening even after the danger has passed.

These experiences can shape what we believe about ourselves, our security, and our place in the world. But thanks to its neuroplasticity, the brain can heal itself, and it wants to.

What is EMDR?

EMDR, Alternating stimulation while recalling a memory helps your brain reprocess it.
